Angelique Kerber, 27th in the world, was swept away in the first round on Sunday at Roland Garros by the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, 139th and after qualifying, 6-2, 6-4 in 1h26.
The 33-year-old German, two-time quarter-finalist in Paris (2012 and 2018) and three-time Grand Slam winner (Australia and US Open 2016, Wimbledon 2018), was down 5-0 in each of the two rounds. In the second, she saved a first match point before losing to the next.
She failed for the third time in a row as soon as she entered the French Open. She had also lost entry to the Australian Open at the start of the season.
For her part, Kalinina, who is playing the main draw at Roland Garros for the first time at 24, will face American Danielle Collins (50th) or Chinese Xi Yu Wang, 145th and after qualifying in the second round.
So far, the Ukrainian has only played two Grand Slam tournaments: the 2018 US Open (eliminated in the 2nd round) and the US Open 2020 (1st round).
