“Because it is fun to do something together with other people.” With this sentence, Christoph Hoffmann answered the question in an interview with Main-Post a few months ago why it is still worthwhile to take on an honorary position in the association today. The passionate long-distance runner has now been awarded the Silver City Badge by his hometown for his own commitment over the past four decades.
His diverse activities in sports clubs and associations began when Hoffmann and eight fellow campaigners founded the Wrzburg running community in 1980, of which he is still chairman. But that was just the beginning: he has been the district chairman of the Bavarian Sports Youth since 1999, chairman of the Vital Sports Club since 2000, and as President of the Wrzburg Sports Club Association (VWS) he has represented the interests of a good hundred clubs for eleven years now the city.
“In each of these functions you contribute with full strength and have moved a lot. You have thus had a lasting impact on sporting and social life in our city,” said Sports Mayor Judith Jrg, who received the award in the Behr Hall of the town hall made in a small circle.
Hoffmann as a long-distance and ultra-runner
Hoffmann was a successful athlete himself throughout his life and, as a long-distance and ultra runner, has brought home numerous titles, trophies and medals. He received the silver city badge for his extraordinary services as a “multiple sports function”, as the mayor emphasized.
This includes the almost forty-year commitment of the retired special school teacher in the Vital Sports Club Wrzburg, which under his chairmanship has transformed from a former association for disabled people into an inclusive community for people with and without handicaps. For this reason, the management of the association was named “Board of the Year” in 2010 by the Main-Post media group.
In addition to inclusion, Christoph Hoffmann is particularly interested in the sporting exchange with Wrzburg’s partner cities. Through the synergy effects of his numerous responsible positions, he was able to give both concerns an additional boost, said Judith Jrg. Hoffmann’s commitment also led to the city’s guidelines for promoting sport being adapted with a view to inclusive sport.
The list of honors that Christoph Hoffmann has already received is correspondingly long, including the Bavarian Honorary Medal for special merits in sport and the Medal of Merit of the French Republic for youth and sport.
