US Open secret curse: Struff can’t win in New York

German tennis professionals Jan-Lennard Struff and Dominik Koepfer missed out on reaching the second round of the US Open. The Warsteiner Struff had to admit that he lost to the Serb Laslo Djere in a five-set thriller and after a great fight with 7: 6 (9: 7), 1: 6, 7: 6 (9: 7), 4 : 6, 2:6 and awaiting his first New York opening win since 2020. Koepfer previously lost a qualifier to Kazakh Alexander Shevtschenko 3:6, 5:7, 7:5, 2:6 and never came close to his peak.

For Koepfer, this is the second loss in the first round in a row in New York, where he reached the round of 16 in his first participation in 2019. Against world number 61, Koepfer (world ranking position 83) had problems from the start in humid weather and made too many simple mistakes. He battled again in the third set, but in the end the 30-year-old had to concede defeat after about three hours of play.
