VIKERSUND (VG) Eirin Kvandal (21) took the show jumping world by storm three winters ago. Then she fell and left the ground on a stretcher. Now she may be on her way back to the top.

Mosjøen’s eldest daughter won in her second World Cup race. Two weeks later, she suffered a serious knee injury – and both the World Cup 2021 and the Olympics 2022 were cancelled.

– She has perhaps the greatest capacity of our girls. Eirin was born a ski jumper! She measures up to many of the guys in speed at the jumping edge, says showjumping manager Clas Brede Bråthen – before he adds.

– But she has had a checkered career with long injury breaks. This is the first winter that she feels she can compete properly again. But we are careful with her. For the WC in Trondheim in 2025, that is the big goal. But I think she can fight for victories already now.

Eirin Kvandal already showed it a few weeks ago: Then she won the king’s trophy after winning on the plastic in Midstua.

– I’m taking steps and have built a lot of confidence in the ground this summer, so I’m really looking forward to the winter, she says.

– Is it about security?

– Yes, it’s about jumping as best as possible. I spent the season last year getting back on the ground.

– Is there a lot on your mind after the dramatic fall in 2021?

– Yes, there has been a lot in my head, but now I think it’s good and I’m enjoying myself on the ground. It wasn’t like that in the beginning. When you come back injured, it takes some time before you build up security both for yourself and everything around you.

Here you see the case:

– You don’t dread landing?

– In the!

Kvandal is happy that national team coach Christian Meyer & co matched her carefully with slow speed last season:

– We could have driven at full speed and got results. But my coaches have given me time. I am proud of that. And this year I’m ready for more!

– It must be hard to wait?

– It has not been easy, no. It hasn’t! There have been many people who have had opinions about this. But I am very satisfied that we have stood by it. I am absolutely convinced that this is the right way to do it.

Eirin Kvandal first struggled with her back, then came the knee injury and last winter it was about severe pain in her calves.

– It was almost like landing on stilts, she says.

– You become uncertain and go for the landings earlier – and then you get even more hurt. It’s a tired spiral.

– But now?

– Now I can jump far without getting pain. Now I can’t wait to finally show what I’m good at!
