Cup celebration marked by Sporting’s refusal to hand over revenue from the game with Olivais and Moscavide
Lions say “ethically it doesn’t make sense.” Club from the Lisbon district argues that the money would go towards organizing the meeting.
The Portuguese Cup game taking place tonight, at 8:45 pm, at the José Gomes Stadium, in Reboleira, between Sporting and Olivais e Moscavide has not yet started and has already attracted a lot of attention from the fans.
At the origin of the controversy surrounding the match is Sporting’s decision not to give up the ticket revenue from the match, which will not be played at the team’s usual home in the Lisbon district.
“Sporting CP fights for transparency in football, and although it is historically a common practice, it ethically considers it not to make sense to donate revenue (regardless of the amounts involved) to teams with whom it will compete”, said an official Sporting source in a clarification sent to Record.
“Combating an idea that unfortunately persists that financial support for smaller clubs serves the purpose of giving an advantage to bigger clubs, namely holding games in stadiums with conditions more favorable to the ‘big ones’.”
Olivais e Moscavide regrets the decision, but guarantees that he did not expect anything
At first, the host club reacted and regretted Sporting’s refusal to give up the revenue from the match.
“When the draw was made and we found out that we were going to face Sporting, our biggest concern, knowing that we weren’t going to play here, was finding a place where we could celebrate football. When we chose the José Gomes Stadium, in Reboleira, we realized that we would have a lot of organizational expenses. What we expected from the other entities involved in this game was support to help us promote football”, he also said to Recordthe president of Olivais and Moscavide, Gonçalo Candeias.
The Lisbon district club reached this stage of the competition after beating Real Massamá, 2-1, and Os Sandinenses, 3-1. The leader of the emblem still regretted the decision of the lions.
“We respect [a decisão], because whoever runs Sporting must decide. Often these games are a kind of oxygen balloon for smaller clubs, but that is not the case for us. The revenue that we would expect Sporting to be able to give us was solely for the organization of this game, to help us with the expenses that we will incur. It has nothing to do with an oxygen balloon or a ‘jackpot’, as many call it”, he stressed.
In a statement, the club stressed that the financial aid would be to guarantee and ensure the conduct of the match, since, for example, the “100 PSP personnel who will be on duty in this game, will not be on site because it is usual for a PSP game.” Olivais and Moscavide”.
