This Sunday, Sporting won the first trophy of the 2023-24 national handball season, by prevailing, at the Pavilhão Municipal de Santo Tirso, against Benfica, 38-34, in the Super Cup final. It was the “lions” fourth victory in the competition and the first since 2013, the year in which they defeated FC Porto in the decisive match.
In this edition, the clash with the “dragons” took place in the semi-finals, while Benfica had eliminated Marítimo. Yesterday, the final was very balanced for more than two thirds of the time, with successive draws and the biggest difference between the rivals being, by a few seconds, the two goals.
On Benfica’s side, Filip Taleski kept the team in contention for the result (six goals), with the help of Ole Rahmel from the seven-meter line (five goals out of the seven he scored). For Sporting, Salvador Salvador came out on top, as did the unmissable Francisco Costa, both with seven goals, only surpassed by Martim Costa, with nine. Natan Díaz was decisive for the “lions” to take the lead at a later stage of the match.
It ended up being the effectiveness of the six-meter line that made the difference for Sporting (87% against 74%), which also took advantage of the greater number of technical errors from its rival (nine against six) to “steal” the trophy that had achieved in 2022. And it was also the “lions” third triumph in the derbyafter the victories for the League, by 32-26 and 29-36.
