Sporting President Frederico Varandas Proposes Universal Voting Rights in Club Statute Change

In the editorial published this Friday in the newspaper ‘Sporting’, Frederico Varandas announces the presentation to the Board of the General Assembly (MAG) of a proposal to change statutes and allow universal voting. “As long as there is a member who we do not allow to vote, we will be moving away from the DNA that in 1906 created us a Club of Portugal with the ambition of being a ‘citizen’ of the world. (…) We are not a Lisbon club. We have members spread across Portugal and around the world who are unable to participate. Others with mobility difficulties. Some who work or have some impediment on the days of the General Assembly. There are many of us, all passionate about the club. Everyone wants to participate and enjoy their rights in the club. totality. They never forget us, we cannot forget them. (…) In this sense, we presented to the Board of the General Assembly the request to present an amendment to the statutes that allows the universality of the right, which all subsists, to vote”, wrote the president of the Alvalade club. The proposal will be voted on at the General Assembly scheduled for October 8th.

“Dear Members,

We won together, in August 2022, the battle that could have taken away control of our own destiny, when we secured the majority of the capital of Sporting SAD.

We completed the conversion of 83,563,849 VMOC before the deadline of December 2026, ensuring in advance that the Partners will be able to decide our future.

Once this enormous achievement has been achieved, it is of equal importance that all Partners can decide, and not just a minority.

It is my firm opinion that as long as there is a Member who we do not allow to vote, we will be moving away from the DNA that in 1906 created a Club of Portugal with the ambition of being a “citizen” of the world.

In 117 years we have made this ambition a reality, but we still cannot today, in the midst of the 4th Industrial Revolution − the greatest technological revolution ever – overcome the physical barriers that prevent the majority of Members from being able to vote.

We are not a Lisbon club. We have Members spread across Portugal and around the world who are unable to participate. Others with mobility difficulties. Some who work or have some impediment on General Assembly days. There are many of us, all passionate about the Club. Everyone wants to participate and enjoy their rights in full. They never forget us, we cannot forget them.

Anything that makes it impossible for a Member to vote should move us all.

I therefore address you, on behalf of the Board of Directors, so that you have the last word at the Club’s next General Assembly, in the decision to allow the vote for Sporting CP to truly be a Universal Vote.

In this sense, we presented to the Board of the General Assembly the request to present an amendment to the statutes that allows for the universality of the right, which everyone has, to vote.

The Board of Directors that I preside over will be just a soldier, convinced that this is, above all, a decision of justice for the inclusion of all of you, whose distance makes mobilization and participation difficult or impedes.

It is, in our view, a unique opportunity for each person to decide so that everyone can always decide.

On October 8th the decision is yours.

Thanks.

Sporting Always! Long live or Sporting!”
