Laut Trainer Amorim
Apparently, Sporting Lisbon cannot afford to bring back to life superstar Cristiano Ronaldo who fell at Manchester United. Coach Rúben Amorim (quoted via “Sky Sports”) explained this before his team’s appearance in the Champions League at Tottenham on Wednesday night. “Everyone at Sporting dreams of Cristiano’s return, but we don’t have the money to pay him his salary,” laughed the 37-year-old. “I think he’s happy in Manchester, but he’s not playing. That’s the problem.”
He does not wish to speak further on the subject, Amorim pointed out. Solo: Ronaldo “is a top player and he will remain so for a few more months”. The coach continues: “I’m happy with my players, at the moment I have no problems, I just want to beat Tottenham.” Sporting, currently third in the standings, are fighting in a group with the “Spurs” (1st), Olympique Marseille (2nd) and Eintracht Frankfurt (4th) for the advancement in the “premier class”.
Mbappé ousts Messi and Ronaldo: the 10 highest paid footballers of 2022/23
Ronaldo, who began his glorious career in Lisbon, returned to training with the Red Devils after manager Erik ten Hag suspended the veteran last Thursday. The reason for the disqualification was Ronaldo’s premature exit from the Premier League match against Tottenham, when the substitute left the inside of the stadium before the final whistle.
The speculations on a possible departure of the five-time Golden Ball do not stop. His advisor Jorge Mendes is said to continue offering the 37-year-old Portuguese, whose contract with United expires at the end of the season, at various clubs in Europe. Ronaldo has only been allowed to go the full distance once this season and is now a long way from the state of the previous days. According to “Forbes”, the striker is still the third highest paid footballer in 2022/23, behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé (both from PSG).
