Sporting Kansas City player is suspended all year for bettor

The Colombian midfielder, nationalized from the United States, Felipe Hernández, was suspended for the rest of the 2021 season after verifying an investigation that he participated in illegal betting on MLS matches. Hernández is a teammate of Mexican Alan Pulido at Sporting Kansas City.

The 23-year-old player violated MLS rules of game integrity and standards of conduct, the circuit warned in a statement released on Friday.

The investigation began on July 5, shortly after Hernández revealed to Kansas City officials that he was concerned for his safety due to his gambling addiction and the debts he had incurred for gambling.

MLS and the club informed the authorities and provided support and assistance to the player.

MLS hired a specialized law firm to conduct an independent investigation, which found no evidence that Hernández bet for or against his own team.

Nor was it established that the integrity of any MLS game had been compromised as a result of the actions of Hernández, who had been provisionally suspended from soccer activity since last July.
