Coach continues to shine with Sporting on all fronts
Sporting won (36-31) and eliminated Marítimo, guaranteeing the final four of the Portuguese Cup, in a match where the lions were superior and Ricardo Costa, coach of the trophy holders, commented on the match on his club’s channels: “Game dominated by us from start to finish. We knew that Marítimo were going to play a lot in 7×6 and they managed to slow down the pace of the game a little, which became slower. That’s what they wanted, to have prolonged attacks and lower our concentration. We had a good first part, we managed to keep going and went into the break with a good lead. In the second half, we had the opportunity to go, several times, to eight or nine [de vantagem], but we failed more and Marítimo ended up getting closer. However, I think that, in the last ten minutes, we were quite focused again.”
The coach was happy that Sporting continued to shine on all fronts, Cup, Championship and European League: “We knew it was a knockout game and that Marítimo had every right to believe they could go through. In the last game in home they had drawn with Benfica. We were prepared to play on Saturday and had to wait for this Wednesday to face Marítimo. It’s obvious that we didn’t like it, but we can’t control it. The game is done, we’re heading to the final four and we have all the world’s ambition to be able to win the third consecutive Portuguese Cup. It is one of the objectives of the season. We achieved this step and now we want to rest and look at what comes next. We have the beginning of the final phase of the National Championship in Braga and that’s it that we will focus”, said Ricardo Costa.
