Sporting Beats Benfica in National Basketball Championship Final

Sporting beat Benfica at Luz, this Tuesday, by 93-87, in the second game of the national basketball championship final. After the defeat by the smallest margin on Sunday, the lions tie the tie (best of five).

In the first minutes, the defenses of both teams were in evidence, until Betinho Gomes and Marcus Lovett Jr. started to take over the game and the score was gaining other contours. Benfica closed the first period in advantage (25-21) and, in the second, even managed to expand it, having gone into the break winning by nine points of difference (48-39).

When they went to the changing rooms, the reds had a 29% percentage of converting triples, the same as the lions, but they were clearly superior in the two-point launches, with 77% against 33 for the leonine team.

Sporting stood out in the outside game, while the eagles were very comfortable in areas close to the basket.

However, in the third period, Sporting, with Lovett jr. at an excellent level, he entered with everything and quickly managed to take the lead. Moreover, the lions closed the penultimate quarter with a six-point advantage, not least because the reds, in the first four minutes, added just three points (12 in total for the third period).

In the last four, Benfica re-entered the match, even taking the lead, but they can blame themselves for the various turnoversmany of them not even forced, which allowed Sporting to dig a considerable gap and hold the advantage until the end.

On Benfica’s side, Toney Douglas, with 21 points, was the top scorer. Already on the leonine side, Travante Williams and Marcus Lovett J. (excluded three minutes from the end) also finished with the mark of 21 points.

Game 3 is scheduled for this Friday (19h00), this time at Pavilhão João Rocha.
