Nibali solos to overall victory in Tour of Sicily

sport">3:09 PM: Italian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali has won the Tour of Sicily. The 36-year-old Nibali, who comes from the island, did so in style with a victory in the last stage. The Trek-Segafredo rider soloed to the win of the 180-kilometer final stage to Mascali.

sport">Nibali jumped away on the final climb and kept his lead in the descent. The ‘Shark of Messina’, as it is nicknamed, arrived at the finish almost fifty seconds earlier than its pursuers. Nibali not only won the stage, but also the final classification. The Italian ousted Spanish veteran Alejandro Valverde from first place.

sport">The 41-year-old Valverde, who finished second in the general classification, had won the third stage a day earlier. Colombian Juan Sebastian Molano won the first two stages over Sicily. The 21-year-old Thymen Arensman (Team DSM) was seventh in the general classification. Nibali announced last week that after this season he will return to Astana, the team for which he won the Tour de France in 2014.

Belgian national coach sees nothing in World Cup every other year

sport">2:40 pm: Belgian national coach Roberto Martinez sees nothing in a football World Cup that is held every other year. According to the Spanish trainer of the ‘Red Devils’, who have been leading the FIFA world rankings for more than three years, the charm of the global football tournament would disappear.

sport">“Actually, I can’t say much about that, because I don’t know the details as we have never been officially informed about those plans,” said Martinez when presenting his selection for the final round of the Nations League. “But I don’t think a biennial World Cup is positive for football. The charm is that the tournament is only played once every four years.”

sport">FIFA, the world football association, wants to reform the international match days calendar. An important part of the plans is to hold the World Cup every other year, instead of once every four years. FIFA discussed the plans with the affiliated national associations on Thursday. The KNVB has not yet been heard in the discussion, national coach Mark Parsons of the football players said he is already against a biennial World Cup.

sport">“I do think that international football needs to be reconsidered,” said Martinez. “We expect a lot from the players, that they reach their level for both their team and their country. And that over very long periods. The result is overcrowded calendars.” Belgium will play next week in the semi-finals of the Nations League against world champions France. The other finalist comes from the match between Spain and Italy, the winner of the European Championship.

Kenyan Kipserem goes for ‘hat trick’ in Rotterdam marathon

sport">2:19 p.m.: Marius Kipserem will try to win the Rotterdam marathon for the third time on Sunday 24 October. The 33-year-old Kipserem triumphed more than two years ago on the Coolsingel in a course record of 2.04.11. It also meant a personal record for the Kenyan, who was also the strongest in Rotterdam in 2016.

sport">„Toppers with such great aspirations as Marius Kipserem and Bashir Abdi give the event something special. It promises to be an exciting and fast race”, says Mario Kadiks, who will retire after 35 editions as organizer of the marathon in Rotterdam. Kadiks previously reported the arrival of Belgian athlete Abdi, who ran to bronze at the marathon in Sapporo last summer at the Olympic Games, following his Dutch training companion Abdi Nageeye.

sport">Nageeye raced two years ago in Rotterdam to a Dutch record of 2.06.17. The 32-year-old athlete is skipping this month’s marathons domestically. Nageeye prepares for the New York Marathon on November 7.

Sparta until the end of October without suspended Aaron Meijers

sport">11.03 am: Sparta Rotterdam has to do without Aaron Meijers for the next three games. The left back is suspended for four games, one of which is conditional, after his red card against SC Cambuur (0-4). Meijers did not agree with the prosecutor’s settlement proposal, but the disciplinary committee came to the same sentence.

sport">That means that trainer Henk Fraser has to do without two left backs for the time being. Mica Pinto was suspended this week after a lengthy legal process for three games (one on probation) after his red card against Go Ahead Eagles in late August. The disciplinary committee had previously acquitted Pinto, but the prosecutor appealed. The appeals committee found that the Luxembourg left-back should receive a suspension.

sport">Meijers was sent off in the 88th minute against Cambuur, when trailing 3-0, in the 88th minute. While the game was at a standstill, he kicked Tom Boere down. Meijers will miss the away game against PSV on Sunday and will also miss FC Groningen (October 17) and RKC Waalwijk (October 23) after the international match.

Wildcard Kim Clijsters for top tournament Indian Wells

sport">8.06 am: Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters is allowed to participate in the leading tournament of Indian Wells, also known as the fifth grand slam. The 38-year-old Flemish, former number 1 in the world, has received a wildcard from the American organization. She made her comeback earlier this week after an absence of more than a year.

sport">Clijsters made a comeback for the second time at the beginning of 2020, but she did not play much. She underwent knee surgery in October last year, followed by a corona infection in January this year. She resumed the competition this week at the WTA tournament in Chicago, but lost immediately. Taiwanese Hsieh Su-Wei was too strong for the Belgian in the first round. Clijsters won Indian Wells in 2003 and 2005.
