A new hall for the tennis players of the Baldham Vaterstetten sports club is to be built on credit, and that in both senses of the word. Firstly, it is about an air dome and secondly, a loan and a grant from the community to the association should flow for this. Both of these have now led to criticism in the local council, but in the end the majority voted in favor of the project.
The club has been looking for a way to ensure year-round training for tennis players for a long time. Almost two years ago there was already an attempt to do this, at that time the club favored a permanent hall with four seats. As Mayor Leonhard Spitzauer (CSU) explained at the meeting, this plan failed because of the building permit. Because the sports field belongs to the municipality of Vaterstetten, but it is in the area of the Zorneding neighbors. They were not enthusiastic about the hall plans and would have made it clear that they would not change their development plan for it.
The now proposed air dome is therefore “Plan B”, according to Spitzauer, but one with better chances of success. Preliminary talks have already been held with the district office, according to Brigitte Littke, head of the building department, and there they basically expressed themselves benevolently with regard to the building permit for the hall. Which is probably also due to the fact that the building would not only have to be removed quickly, but with a floor area of 37 by 37 meters and a maximum height of eleven meters, it should also be significantly smaller than the fixed sports hall. The air-supported building would therefore only span two tennis courts.
The slimmed-down hall version would cost around 600,000 euros, and it is to be financed through a “four-pillar model,” as treasurer Markus Porombka explained. A donation of 35,600 euros is expected from the Bavarian State Sports Association, the club will raise 50,000 euros in its own funds. A further 364 400 euros will be provided as a loan by the municipality, which the SC intends to repay over the next 20 years. There is also a municipal grant of 150,000 euros.
Axel Weingärtner (Greens) assessed these two positions extremely critically. He recalled the budget consultations, where savings had been agreed, including the post of mobility manager. “We’re already doing things that hurt us – and now we’re supposed to pay a grant of 150,000 euros, a loan and possibly costs for compensation areas.” He could not agree to that, “we spend money that we do not have”. And there is another reason the parliamentary group sees the project as critical: the energy balance. Felix Edelmann criticized the fact that the hall should be heated with liquefied gas and that the overall energy consumption is rather high compared to a conventional building due to the poor insulation and the fan. “The hall really fires out the energy,” said David Göhler.
Reinhard Lorch, head of the tennis department at SCBV and head of the indoor project, did not have any doubts. The permanent hall would certainly have been better in terms of energy, but unfortunately it could not be implemented. In the concrete planning, however, one will pay attention to whether one can use renewable energy sources. In terms of costs, however, the air dome is an advantage – the solid construction would have cost a good two million euros more.
The other municipal council groups supported the SCBV project. “It is important that the square can be operated all year round,” said Günter Lenz (SPD), especially for the association’s youth work. Renate Will (FDP) also referred to this and recalled that the association had been looking for a solution here for years, and that the air dome was now the only possible one. Her group colleague Klaus Willenberg also saw it that way, but he criticized the procedure. After all, the municipality wants to prioritize its projects, and the hall should have belonged on this list.
Michael Niebler (CSU) referred to the urgency of the decision: “If we don’t get it off the ground today, the club will abandon the project, with all the consequences.” The CSU parliamentary group leader sees this primarily in a loss of sports in general and that for young people in particular. “Our strengths are manageable, but we as a community are really leaders in sport,” said Niebler. This is also and especially evident from the fact that so many young people are involved in sports clubs.
That was the opinion of the majority of the community council members. Both the financial support of the sports facility and its implementation as an air dome were decided against the Greens. But whether it can really be built now depends on the Zorneding community. There will soon be another application to change the development plan for the sports area.
