Another important result of the study: “Primary school children who are in good physical shape and have the ability to concentrate are more likely to make the leap to high school,” says Prof. Renate Oberhoffer-Fritzowner of Chair of Preventive Paediatrics and Dean of the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences.
“It is all the more important to encourage children to develop motor skills at an early stage, because this can also have a positive influence on the development of mental fitness,” Prof. Oberhoffer-Fritz continues. In order to create a suitable offer for this across the board, cooperation between parents, schools, communities and sports clubs is important.
dr Thorsten Schulz, head of the study team at TUM, adds: “The study results were also an opportunity for the district of Berchtesgadener Land and the regional network Gesundheitsregion-Plus, since 2019, to give all first-graders in the region vouchers for one-year membership in a sports club to distribute. This is a nice example of how different actors can work together and motivate and help children to play sports.”
