In this period of Covid-19, rare are the occasions that one has to practice sports activity several. It is a possibility that offers Urban Runners Bordeaux, association born in 2015 which offers collective running sessions. Seven volunteers (a leader and six captains) give of their time (almost) every evening to many aficionados.
“Depending on our schedule, we try to set up sessions regularly with a start at 5.45 pm” explains Grégory Gasson, the leader of the Urban Runners in Bordeaux.
The association was born in Bordeaux in 2015. Since then, it has spread to the whole of France. I would say that about fifteen cities entered this great team. On our side, the demand is very strong. We have more than 3,500 people who follow us on social networks and a few hundred who regularly come to train.
A necessary adaptation during a Covid period
Depending on everyone’s schedules, levels, and demand, the seven volunteers still organize running sessions during the global pandemic. “We are obviously hampered by the 10 km distance to be respected, but also by the curfew at 7 pm or even the groups of six people to be set up,” recalls Grégory.
In short, a hell of a puzzle that the team must face. However, suitable routes whether on the right or left bank side are offered. Even if the moments of conviviality outside remain impossible to share.
It is true that currently, only the field of sport brings us together. That is to say that usually, we share a drink at the end of the session, or each one brings back his meal … There, it is not possible, but it is already a good thing to be able to meet again . This morning (this Saturday, editor’s note), 22 people gathered at the starting point. We had to call another captain to organize the groups of six. But it shows the motivation of the people.
Values not to be violated
While Urban Runners is “currently the largest association in France to offer free running sessions without commitments”, the group wishes to instill and share important values. “We are amateurish. Obviously, there are sometimes races, very good runners who reach a good level, but it is before us a collective that we want to put forward ”testifies Grégory.
