Sport – Gelsenkirchen:Schalke’s e-sports boss: LEC slot sale is not certain
Directly from the dpa news channel
Berlin / Gelsenkirchen (dpa) – According to its Chief Gaming Officer Tim Reichert, FC Schalke 04 has not yet made a final decision on the sale of the starting place in the European League of Legends League LEC. As Reichert told the German Press Agency on Friday, this should only happen in the next two weeks.
“Bild” had previously reported that Schalke wanted to sell the starting place in the highest European class of e-sports for 30 million euros. Between the spring and summer seasons, Schalke already sold one of their strongest players, Felix “Abbedagge” Braun, to a team in the North American LoL league LCS.
FC Schalke 04 acquired the slot in the franchise league with ten teams in 2019 for eight million euros. The LEC team is considered a model company for German football clubs in e-sports. The club has been able to consolidate itself on the scene in recent years.
“Of course it is the case that football is always more important in the core business,” Reichert told the dpa in February. The Schalke football professionals were recently relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. The club is in a difficult financial position.
