Sport between walking, art and nature: listening to the voices of the volcano – Sport

They walk, they run. They pedal, they swim. And then they explore, they discover. They inhabit, they live. Sport in nature. The sport of existence. The sport of survival. Women and men, often dwarfed by the grandeur of woods, mountains, volcanoes.

Toni Demuro illustrates “The voices of the volcano”, project by Fernanda Pessolano/Ti con Zero, a festival held in an ancient land of fire, that of the Sabatino Volcanic Complex, which is reborn here as a traveling theater and natural stage, between the village of Cesano, the Rigo forest, the Martignano lake, in the Bracciano-Martignano Regional Natural Park and in Isola Farnese in the Veio Regional Natural Park. Plural narratives from 13 to 22 September 2024 with paths of art and nature, dance and science, traveling training of performing arts, theater for children and puppetry in the woods, digital diary. Themes in Demuro’s poetics.

Fifty years old, Sardinian, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari, Demuro started with a tree: first climbing it, then drawing it. “When, in 2011, I opened a blog to make myself known, almost every day I drew a tree, the first year I created 275. And that 2011 was the year dedicated to forests was just a coincidence. Trees are roots and flowers, they are wind and seasons, they are escapes and inspirations, even exercises, they are Cosimo the Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino and Elzéard the Shepherd Planter by Jean Giono, they are a universal symbol to which we are all linked”.

Then the mountains, another of his passions: “And among the mountains, also the volcanoes, which have something more intimate and interior, visceral. The first volcano in 2023, to illustrate the album of a French band. Once again my land came to my aid, the memory of a lava stone quarry, a mountain cut in half”.

Demuro divides his work (“In the morning, the work on commission, and in the evening, if there is nothing urgent, the work of my imagination”), for many years now he has only worked digitally (“A desktop graphic tablet with a large screen, or a smaller one to take everywhere”), but he has also resumed analog work (“With pastels, on paper”), he has his own range of colors (“Yellows, oranges, reds, greens, certain blues… usually warm and unsaturated”), he is the first judge of himself (“Very bad, I demand, I review, sometimes after years I take it up again and redo it”). His men are “not so much social, but solitary and thoughtful”, his women are “deep and introspective, they have references to my personal life, but I don’t want to reveal them”. And his relationship with nature “is not that of an associated activist, but of a conscious anarchist, I clean the beaches not as a mission but by instinct and rebellion. Despite man’s efforts to destroy it, nature takes back its spaces, magnificent and grandiose, and this is why in my images humans, in comparison, appear so tiny.”

Demuro illustrates educational books and books for children and young adults, collaborates with newspapers and magazines, creates images for jazz and literary festivals, firma per “The New York Times” e “Vanity Fair”, more abroad than in Italy. For sources of inspiration, he just needs to look inside and outside, even in the past. Between “Moby Dick” (“It surprises me with its irony, as well as its ability to tell a story”) and “Il colore del pomegranato” (“A Russian film, late 1960s, the life of an Armenian poet, without dialogue”), the joy of organizing an exhibition of other Sardinian illustrators (“In Osilo, in the Sassari area, in the deconsecrated church of Santa Croce, christened ‘Illusà’, held between 2023 and 2024 and destined to be the first small step in building a festival dedicated to the world of illustration. The next event in October-November 2024”).

And sports? Demuro has no doubts: “It’s hot, strong, explosive. It’s volcanic.”

The project is realized with the support of the Ministry of Culture – General Directorate of Entertainment and is the winner of the Public Notice Live entertainment outside the Center – Year 2024 promoted by Rome Capital – Department of Cultural Activities in collaboration with LEA and SIAE
