Sport Austria President Hans Niessl had a good two and a half hours on Friday with umbrella association representatives at an appointment with Sports Minister Werner Kogler Discussed possibilities for a responsible restart of organized club sport.

Organized club sport – the health engine for around 2 million Austrians – has been at a standstill for six months due to the lockdowns. The republic is helping organized sport financially during the pandemic – so far, 5355 clubs, i.e. around a third of all Austrian sports clubs, have been promised or paid 56.55 million from the non-profit fund – since the club has stopped operating , associations are already reporting a noticeable decline in membership. Thousands of athletes, often children and adolescents, are in danger of being lost to the sport because there are no prospects for the resumption of sport.

Niessl after the meeting with the Minister of Sport: “We met with a lot of understanding, but we have not yet received any specific commitments. But we need to relax, because without prospects the damage to the Austrian sports culture – which is also so important for our health system – threatens to become slow, but definitely irreparable! “During the pandemic, sport had proven that it could implement prevention concepts very well. So far there have been no problematic sports clusters in Austria. Niessl: “On Monday we will present our new proposals for a responsible restart to the public. First of all: As soon as the infection process allows schools to open, organized club sport must also be possible again under very specific framework conditions! “
