Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) is starting to experience the latest wave of Covid-19. This is marked by the cumulative deaths that began to penetrate the 800 thousand cases on Tuesday, (12/14/2021).
In the report Straits Times, data from Johns Hopkins University says that this figure is much larger than the total population of several states such as North Dakota and Alaska. For the cumulative number of cases, the US already has over 50 million cases of Covid-19.
This was taken seriously by the US Government. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate leader Chuck Schumer also asked lawmakers to observe a moment of silence on the steps of the Capitol to commemorate the lives lost in the pandemic.
“On this day … we will remember that 800,000 loved ones didn’t get this far: missing father or grandfather, mother or grandmother, friends, familiar faces in the neighborhood,” Schumer said in a statement.
Annually, in 2021, the US reported 450,000 deaths. This death rate is mostly experienced by groups of people who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19. Research shows that the risk of dying from Covid-19 is 14 times higher among people who have not been fully vaccinated.
Not only deaths, Covid-19 cases are also starting to be reported to rise in several northern states. This is caused by the many activities in the room given the colder temperatures. Even the latest daily increase in infections was recorded at 117 thousand cases
Meanwhile, Uncle Sam’s country itself is still wary of the entry of the Omicron Variant. Currently the variant carrying 32 mutations in its spike protein accounts for about 3% of the total reported cases.
