Gary Lineker is starting to revel in controversial statements. The legendary English striker was astonished this time when he wrote on social networks that Swedish defender Marcus Danielson should not have been disqualified in the eighth finals of the Euro football for a terrifying intervention against Artyom Besedin.
The northern quarterback played the ball in the slip in the eighth minute of the extra time, but with a high-raised leg, he hit the opponent’s knee first with his sole, until it bent ugly, and Besedin writhed in pain on the lawn.
Danielson first received only a yellow card from Daniel Orsat, but immediately entered the VAR situation and sent the Italian referee to the monitor. The review took a short time and the referee quickly turned the card red, although the Swede kept annoying and amazed.
He found a stop at the former gunner Lineker. “This is not a red card. He has every right to play the ball. The slow motion once again made the harmless duel more than it was. Ridiculous,” he said on Twitter.
That’s not a red card. He’s perfectly entitled to clear that ball. Slow motion once again turning an innocuous challenge look more than it was. Ridiculous.

He immediately provoked a wave of reactions. “That’s what a guy who’s never been in a duel says,” TV celebrity Piers Morgan snarled at Lineker. “It was a ruthless operation with a high-legged leg that could break an opponent’s leg,” he warned the former assailant.
“Just because a player gets hurt because someone kicks the ball and accidentally hits it as he continues to move doesn’t mean a foul, let alone a red one,” Lineker said.
But even the experts did not doubt that Danielson was right to march into the cabins. Without him, the Swedes got an overtime goal of 1: 2 in the last seconds, which eliminated them.
“If you slip into the ball with one or both feet, you risk getting a red card for this type of intervention. Danielson raised his leg and, although he played the ball first, hit Artyom Besedin. It was an intervention that endangered the opponent’s health, driven by excessive force and for me, he meets the exclusion criteria, “said Mark Halsey, a former elite Premier League referee, in the Sun newspaper.
This is not the first time that Lineker has surprised at the Euro with his attitude towards the referee’s statements. In the Czech-Croatia match, for example, he claimed that Jaroslav Šilhavý’s team should not have kicked a penalty after Dejan Lovren broke Patrik Schick’s nose with his elbow.
In the latest case, Joey Barton joined his opinion. “Never red for this. Nonsense,” he wrote.
Just in this case, maybe not much to stand for. Barton is the guy who played for Newcastle and Glasgow Rangers, but also sat in prison for 77 days, he smoked a cigar on the face of a teammate, attacked and beat another from behind in training, started a fight with a minor fan, punched his opponent in the stomach and was treated for gambling addiction.
Never a red that! Nonsense
