Splendid Palace Cinema Launches New National Documentary Film Program: Documentary Cinema Mondays

“Splendid Palace” cinema will start 2024 with a new national film program in the series “Documentary Cinema Mondays”, the representative of SIA “Rīgas nami” Guntis Rozenbergs informed LETA agency.

The first screening of the cycle will take place on Monday, January 29, at 7:30 p.m., when director Elita Kļaviņa’s film “The Sisters of Iļguciema” will be shown. The director herself will participate in the screening of the film, and after the film there will be a “Question and Answer” session with the audience.

The selection of “Documentary Cinema Mondays” includes films nominated for the “Lielais Kristaps” National Film Award, made by both experienced documentarians and newcomers to this film genre.

Speaking about the selection of films selected for the cycle, the artistic director of the “Splendid Palace” cinema, Daira Āboliņa, emphasizes that finding stories in real life, highlighting film characters from their daily routines, allowing us to see the personalities of fellow human beings, documenting the present and its people, the often complicated twists and turns of their lives, but to be free from didacticism and condemnation – these are the characteristics of the latest Latvian documentary cinema.

Each “Documentary Cinema Monday” film will be complemented by a “Question and Answer” session with the authors of the films, led by the artistic director of the “Splendid Palace” cinema, film critic Āboliņa.

Director Kļaviņa’s film “The Sisters of Iļguciema”, which was included in the screening of the first Documentary Cinema Monday – January 29 at 7:30 p.m., has received three “Lielā Kristaps” nominations: “Best Film”, “Best Director” and “Best Cinematographer”.

The film premiered at the “Artdocfest” festival, after which it was included in the diptych of the New Riga Theater together with the play “I’m coming back from far away” created by Kļaviņa.

The selection of “Documentary Cinema Mondays” includes the documentary film “Pansija palili” by director Gint Grube, which will be screened on February 26. On the other hand, on March 18, you will be able to watch the film “Potnieks par Podnieku. Laika liecinieks” directed by Antra Cilinska and Anna Viduleja. On April 8, you will be able to watch the film “Patricia” by Ines Kļava and Dāvja Ernsthreit. It is planned that on April 29, those interested will be able to watch the film “Ama osa” by director Marija Stefania Linuža.
