SPKC: The prevalence of Covid-19 continues to grow slowly in Latvia The news

Riga, July 26, LETA. In Latvia, there is still a slight increase in the prevalence of Covid-19, with the average number of new cases of Covid-19 detected per day increasing from 37 to 46 last week, LETA was informed by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC).

The average number of tests performed per day has fallen slightly over the past week. If a week ago, an average of 7234 tests were performed on a daily basis, then last week – 7184 tests.

An average of four Covid-19 patients per day were hospitalized over the past seven days, a slight decrease from the previous week. Thus, an average of 53 people were treated in hospitals on a daily basis last week, compared to 67 in the past.

The SPKC reports that the most pronounced morbidity is still observed among people aged 20 to 29. Most cases of newly discovered Covid-19 were in Riga and Pieriga.

The reproductive rate of Covid-19 infection has now increased to 1.14, which indicates that the prevalence of Covid-19 in Latvia is currently increasing.

The European average of 14 days of cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population has risen to 151.0, up from 89.6 previously. Meanwhile, Latvia’s indicator has decreased from 36.1 to 27.7 cases.

The proportion of Covid-19 cases imported to Latvia in the previous week reached 27%, and last week they were a total of 87 cases, which is 30 more than a week earlier. According to the SPKC, a large proportion of imported Covid-19 cases still come from third countries, accounting for 57% of all imported cases between mid-June and last week.

The most common cases in Latvia came from Russia – 59 cases, Turkey – 31, Spain – 30, Great Britain – 27, the Netherlands – 14, Finland – 13, France – 12, Georgia – nine and Germany – seven. The number of cases imported from other countries is lower.

Last week, a total of 260 cases of Covid-19 or 13.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants of Latvia were diagnosed. A higher incidence was observed among unvaccinated people, with 18.6 cases per 100,000 unvaccinated people. Significantly lower morbidity rates have been recorded among people who have completed a full course of vaccination or partially completed a course of vaccination.

In cases where vaccination was started, 10.3 cases per 100,000 vaccinated persons were recorded, but for people who have completed a full course of vaccination, this indicator is 3.5.

SPKC calls on the population to be vaccinated against Covid-19. Vaccination is the safest and most effective way to protect yourself from severe forms of the disease and to work together to reduce the spread of Covid-19 infection in the community.
