The decision comes days after a controversial incident during the elimination game against Seattlewhere Herrera was expelled after spitting near the referee in protest of a decision. The action, reviewed by the VAR, led to a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct and appears to have been the final catalyst for his contract not being renewed.

The 34-year-old veteran, who shone in European clubs such as Atlético de Madrid and Portofailed to reach the same level of influence in the MLS. Although he contributed to winning the 2023 US Open Cup, his overall performance was below the expectations generated by his signing in 2022.
Herrera’s departure marks the end of a bittersweet stage in Houstonwhere he alternated highlights with controversies. The Mexican midfielder will have to look for a new destination by 2025, in what seems to be the final stage of a career that achieved its greatest successes in Europa.
