From 8 December 2022, an exhibition at the Holocaust Memorial traces the meeting between Spirou and the German Jewish painter Felix Nussbaum.
In his tetralogy “L’Espoir despite tout” (Fauve d’Or for best series at the 49th Angoulême International Comics Festival), the cartoonist Émile Bravo brings together Spirou and the real figure of the German Jewish painter Felix Nussbaum. He describes in particular the conditions of survival of the couple of German Jewish artists formed by the painter with his wife Felka, deported in 1944 to Auschwitz.
After the release of the fourth and last volume of the series published in May 2022 by Dupuis, the Memoriale della Shoah retraces the imaginary Spirou/Nussbaum encounter in the exhibition “Spirou nel tumulto della Shoah” to be discovered from 8 December 2022 to 31 August 2023 at 5 pm, rue Geoffroy-l’Asnier, Paris 4. It allows us to understand the occupation of Belgium: its administration, its daily life, the attitude of its population, which is at the same time resistant, opportunistic, collaborative or even resigned, and the persecutions against the Jews in Belgium.
