The child was supposed to have been on a Spirit plane from Philadelphia International Airport to Southwest Florida International Airport in the city of Fort Myers on December 21. However, he was put on a flight to Orlando, about 150 miles north.
The grandmother, Maria Ramos, was supposed to pick up her grandchild but was told in Fort Myers that he had “missed” his flight. Ramos then showed proof of the boy’s mother checking in on the correct flight in Philadelphia, after which Spirit’s mistake was exposed.
Maria Ramos picked up the young passenger in her own car; Spirit apologized and later reimbursed the grandmother’s expenses.
Wrong gate
The airline also started an internal investigation, which revealed last week that the mistake was committed by a staff member.
Like every airline, Spirit also has meticulous procedures unaccompanied minors. There must be an attendant at the departure airport, up to the gate. At the arrival airport, young passengers are then met at the gate and the airline takes care of them until family or other passengers take over responsibility.
In the present case, the employee did not pay close attention and did not check the child’s boarding pass at the destination. Spirit Airlines fired the employee for this error.
