Ahmedabad: England’s batting collapsed in the third Test against India. England, who won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night Test at the Motera Stadium, are 81 for four at tea on the first day. Ben Stotox (6) and Oli Pope (1) are at the crease. Akshar Patel took two wickets for India. R Ashwin took one wicket each. This is the only day-night test in the series.
Started by Ishant
The pitch in Motorola was also reminiscent of the Chennai pitch. Three of the four wickets taken in the first session were for spinners. India started with Ishant Sharma. Ishant, playing his 100th Test, took the wicket in the third ball of his second over. Dominic Sibley, who faced just six balls, was caught by Rohit Sharma on the slip and returned.
Session spinners take over
Captain Virat Kohli brought in Akshar Patel in the seventh over after realizing that the pitch was the one that supported the spinners from within. And it worked. On the first ball, Patel sent Johnny Bairstow back. Bairstow was caught in front of the wicket by Patel’s ball. Next was Ashwin’s turn. Captain Joe Root, who was holding on for a while, was trapped in front of the wicket by Ashwin. Zack Crowley, who returned to the team, was also doomed to be caught in front of the wicket. This time it was Akshar who took the wicket.
Changes in both teams
Both the teams came down with changes. Team India is playing only two pacers in the pink ball which was expected to get more swing. Injured pacer Umesh Yadav has been left out of India’s final XI. Mohammad Siraj was replaced by Jaspreet Bumra and Kuldeep Yadav was replaced by Washington Sunder. Ishant Sharma is another pacer. No change in batting line-up. England, meanwhile, have only one spinner. Stuart Broad was retained by England when pacers Joffre Archer and James Anderson returned. Johnny Bairstow and Zack Crowley are the other players who have returned. Jack Leach is the lone spinner.
India’s goal is not just victory
This is the second day-night Test to be played in India. Team India’s goal is not only to win at Motorola. Kolipada is also looking forward to the final of the ICC Test Championship. India and England are tied in a four-match series after winning each Test. India will reach the final of the World Test Championship if they win the series 2-1 or 3-1. England have a chance to win the next two Tests.
