Following the measures adopted by the Government in relation to the dollar, and the twists and turns regarding a possible 15-day suspension of beef exports, a spike in the price of meat was known yesterday in local butcher shops. “A kilo already costs us 2,000 pesos,” stated a butcher consulted by EL DÍA.
In the sector it was indicated that the devaluation and the skyrocketing of the blue dollar were the factors that gave a boost to all prices and beef was not exempt.
The butcher Juan Carlos Marchán said that the situation in the sector is very worrying. “On Friday the meat increased, this Monday there was another increase and they told me that for tomorrow -for today- another 510 more pesos would have to be applied to it,” he said with concern.
He pointed out that if this situation continues, in a short time the kilo of any cut will average 4 thousand pesos. “Even though I allocate the profit from the weekend, I cannot replace it, today the half beef of 133 kilos is at 198,000 pesos and tomorrow they announced to me that it will be 259,000 pesos. Some suppliers suspended deliveries,” Marchán said.
Mariano Colaianni, owner of a butcher shop of 60 and 135, spoke of the staggered increases that occurred since last Friday.
“They told us that on Monday there would be an increase and that today – yesterday – another would be applied, the cost per kilo of half beef went to 2,000 pesos, 30 percent in three days,” said the butcher, recalling that 15 days ago it had already increased by about 800 pesos per kilo.
“There is no one in the shops, people save themselves and avoid spending, but as the days go by, everything returns to normal,” said Colaianni.
EXPORTS
Juan José Bahillo, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, shared a statement in which he denied that exports would be suspended. “Our responsibility as public officials is to bring certainty to the productive sectors and tranquility to the people,” he said.
“From the Ministry of Economy we are negotiating the prices of meat for the internal market and there are no suspensions to the export of meat,” he concluded.
As reported, the last stage of the Government’s price agreement with the beef exporting companies, grouped in the ABC, Única and Fifra chambers, the supermarkets and hypermarkets of the ASU, CAS and FASA chambers and attached butcher shops concluded yesterday.
For his part, the director of a refrigerator in the region indicated that yesterday the government announced that “meat export operations are released.”
It was also reported that after meeting with Mario Ravettino, president of the Argentine Meat Exporters Consortium (ABC), and Juan José Bahillo, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, Guillermo Michel, general director of Customs, affirmed: “We are working with the sector on a volume and price agreement to supply the domestic market and sustain exports”.
