On the night of Friday, shortly after 1:20 a.m., the Bern canton police were informed of a chemical incident at the Spiez train station. “According to current knowledge, a freight wagon set with trucks stopped at the train station in Spiez, and the train driver noticed a pungent smell,” write the Bern canton police and the Frutigen-Niedersimmental government stewardship in a joint media release.
As a result, around 30 members of the Thun chemical and fire brigade and the Spiez fire brigade moved out. By measuring the air, they were able to determine the tanker truck from which the smell was emanating. “A low concentration of a chemical substance, which is mostly used in industry, could be determined,” the message continues.
“No danger to the population”
As further investigations showed, no liquid escaped. The members of the fire brigade found no leak or defective seals in the affected truck. It can be assumed that when the tank was filled, a small amount of the chemical substance splashed onto the insulation, triggering the smell.
Nonetheless, one person had to be taken to a hospital for a check-up. “There was no danger to the population,” the police said. For security reasons, freight traffic had to be interrupted for several hours and the train station and Bahnhofstrasse had to be closed.
