Spielberg, Almodóvar or Tarantino. What movies do Spaniards watch?

What movies do Spaniards prefer to see when they go to the cinema? What is the most prominent genre? What Spanish films are best valued by the public? Which directors and actors top the lists of the most loved ones? Which feature films lead the audience’s tastes? Producer and distributor AMC Networks International unravels all these mysteries in the studio The Spanish and the cinema, conducted in May of this year from 1,515 interviews from a representative sample of citizens between the ages of 16 and 70 from all over the country.

The second most valued director is the Spanish Pedro Almodóvar, chosen by 8.5% of the participants in this study, followed by the American Quentin Tarantino (6.5%). Now that we know what Spaniards like the most, what about how often they go to theaters or watch movies at home? Regardless of whether audiences go to theaters or stay at home, this study reveals that seven out of ten Spaniards watch more than five films a month, while one in four people claims to see more than ten titles in this period. Likewise, 80% of Spaniards indicate that they prefer to watch movies in company, so it can be deduced that watching movies is still considered a social activity.

In addition, this study highlights the diversity of tastes in themes and genres. The favorite genre of Spaniards is science fiction or fantasy (18.81%), followed by thriller (17.76%) and action (16.7%). These options are followed, with also prominent positions, romantic comedy (12.41%) and terror (9.83%).
