The PlayStation game Spider-Man: Miles Morales has been updated on PS5 to allow players to use ray tracing in conjunction with a frame rate of 60 frames per second. Previously, ray tracing was only possible with a lower frame rate.
Developer Insomniac Games says on Twitter that this is an update that adds a ‘Performance RT’ mode. This mode thus allows ray tracing at 60fps. In the game, when selecting this mode, it is stated that it is an alternative version of the already present Performance mode, which also allowed 60fps.
The developer says this new mode with 60fps and ray tracing does mean that the resolution has been adjusted in-game, which also applies to the quality of reflections and the amount of pedestrians. This is consistent with other next-gen games, where enabling ray tracing often involves a reduction in resolution, details or frame rate. Before this current update 1,007,001 was available, there were two flavors in Spider-Man: Miles Morales: 4k and 30fps with ray tracing, or 4k and 60fps but without ray tracing.
The update covers 262MB. A user proposes that it looks very good and that the 60fps is constantly achieved, although it is still unclear with which resolution this will be accompanied. A dynamically scaling resolution will likely be used, with the resolution being dynamically adjusted to achieve a stable 60fps and ray tracing performance. The YouTube channel ContraNetwork already has one video uploaded with gameplay footage, in which the new mode is enabled.
The new Performance RT mode is only available on PlayStation 5. For the time being, this option is not available in the PS5 remaster of the original Spider-Man game. A player asked the question on Twitter whether this combination of 60fps and raytracing will also be brought to this remaster. The developer has not yet given a clear answer to that; James Stevenson, the community director van Insomniac Games, responded directly to this question, but only with a thinking face-smiley.
