Spider-Man – Far From Home: have you seen the superhero wink at Captain America in Endgame?

Before “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Peter Parker brought the conclusion of Marvel’s Phase 3 with Tom Holland’s second solo film: “Spider-Man: Far From Home”. A film stamped with the seal of the MCU, and in which Spider-Man offers a nice action sequence in reference to Captain America.

Spider-Man : Far From Homethe flight of Tom Holland

In July 2019, Spider-Man : Far From Home is Tom Holland’s fifth appearance as the superhero. And a few months after the historic release ofAvengers : Endgamehis second “solo” film after Spider-Man : Homecoming is he too a great success. On the program, a vacation for Peter Parker in Europe with his high school friends and MJ (Zendaya), but which will be compromised by devastation caused by mysterious creatures. Spider-Man : Far From Home was the highest-grossing Spider-Man film at the time and the first to pass $1 billion in box office receipts, and brilliantly confirms that Tom Holland is the ideal casting for the role. But he is also an MCU movieand not just any…

When Spider-Man pays tribute in action to Captain America

Spider-Man : Far From Home is the last film of the monumental phase 3 of the MCU, the one that brings a conclusion to the Saga of infinity. With events taking place eight months after those ofAvengers : Endgame, the film fits entirely into its continuity. There are therefore many easter eggs as well as explicit references in Spider-Man : Far From Home – including those to Tony Stark, celebrated around the world – but also more subtle winks. In particular, a certain action sequence where the spider-man is inspired by the legendary Captain America version Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), in Avengers : Endgame. If you are one of the very few who have not already seen the film, beware what follows is a SPOILER.

In the final showdown on Tower Bridge in London, as he runs out of webs and is looking for something to fight against Mysterio, Spider-Man tinkers with a weapon with the motor of a Mysterio drone, the battery of a vehicle and a safety belt. And to protect himself, he grabs a plate from the deck to use it as a shield. He then rushes running between the rubble and launches his weapon in a “bell” fashion towards the swarm of drones (from 0’00 to 0’27 in this extract). A weapon that evokes a hammer, a shield…

The sequence is very successful because it shows the character’s inventiveness on the one hand and his resourceful side on the other, low budget, which reinforces his sympathy. But above all, it makes a reference to Captain America in the final confrontation ofAvengers : Endgamewhen this one armed with his shield and Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, launches the unforgettable “Assemble”. In this sequence, we see him run with all the other Avengers towards Thanos and his army and send the hammer in a movement (below from 3’19), which is very little like that of Spider- Man on the famous London Bridge.

Spider-Man quickly abandons his hammer and his shield of fortunes, to continue the confrontation with his bare hands against Mysterio. But it only took a few seconds to create a very successful sequence and pay tribute to the famous Steve Rogers, so far only other Avenger than Thor to be able to use the famous hammerand who takes his final bow at the end ofEndgame.
