So, the combat engineers of Ukraine’s 128th ‘Transcarpathia’ Mountain Assault brigade used domestically produced spider boots. The boots were strapped over combat boots to protect against minefields that hindered Ukrainian attacks on Russian fortifications in southern Ukraine.
The four-pronged spider boots reduce the risk from mines through several mechanisms. First, the spider’s four pod-tipped legs could potentially save the legs and groin from the explosion that exploded directly below them.
The resulting air gap significantly reduces the energy transmitted directly from the detonation on the ground to the wearer, including by allowing more of the explosive energy to be dissipated to the sides. Then, the shape and material of the sole are designed to deflect and absorb the generated energy.
So if a soldier steps on a mine with spider boots on, they may be injured, but the leg is likely intact. You can also avoid the risk of death from blood loss, as often happens after losing a limb. It is not yet known how effective these shoes are and how many have been used by the Ukrainian army.
