Spending by international tourists increased only 0.5 percent in July

Spending by international tourists arriving in Mexico during the month of July reached 2,497.5 million dollars, only 0.5 percent more than in the same month in 2023, while the arrival of travelers from around the world reached 3.99 million, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

According to the International Travelers Survey (EVI), prepared monthly by Inegi, international tourist spending, which reached more than 2.4 billion dollars, 91.8 percent came from inbound tourists, those residing abroad who visit Mexico, cross the border and stay at least one night in a destination in the country, and 8.2 percent from border tourists.

The average spending of inbound tourists was $974.77; that of those who entered by air, $1,097.49; and that of those who entered by land, $382.63. That of border tourists, $124.04.

A total of 3.99 million international tourists (travelers residing abroad) arrived in Mexico in July, still in the summer season, which represents an increase of only 0.7 percent, since in the same month a year earlier, an entry of 3.97 million tourists was reported.

Last July, the number of inbound tourists totaled 2.35 million, a figure that meant a 3.3 percent drop at an annual rate. Those who entered by air represented 82.8 percent of inbound tourists, registering a 3.6 percent reduction at an annual rate. 403,842 (17.2 percent) entered by land: a number that decreased 1.7 percent compared to July 2023.

Meanwhile, during the January-July period, the income from international tourists was 18,764.6 million dollars, which represented an increase of 6 percent compared to the same period in 2023; also exceeding by 34.8 percent the foreign currency of the same period in 2019 (13,924.3 million dollars).

In the first seven months of the year, 25.8 million international tourists arrived in Mexico, 5.3 percent more than the same period last year; while they are 1.5 percent below the pre-pandemic level of 26.2 million.

Meanwhile, in January-July 2024, 14.4 million inbound tourists arrived by air, 3.7 percent more compared to 2023, also exceeding by 18.5 percent the inbound tourists captured in the same period of 2019 (12.1 million tourists).
