RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) — Spending by foreign tourists in Brazil exceeded 26 billion reais (about 4.78 billion U.S. dollars) between January and August 2024, representing a year-on-year growth of 10 percent and the highest figure recorded since 29 years ago when it began to be measured, the Central Bank of the South American country reported today.
In the first eight months of the year, Brazil received more than 4.45 million international travelers, 10.7 percent more than in the same period of 2023 and also 1 percent higher than the number registered from January to August 2019 , even before the COVID-19 pandemic.
In August alone, 417,900 foreign tourists visited Brazilian cities, representing a year-on-year increase of 14.5 percent.
The Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, stated that the Brazilian Government is working on air connectivity and the tourist infrastructure of destinations, in an effort to attract more international visitors.
“The growth of this figure is also due to the reinforcement of international promotion actions. We have been working to show more and more to the world that Brazil is a safe country that brings together natural beauty, culture and gastronomy in the same place,” said the official. .
Through the National Tourism Plan 2024-2027, the federal government seeks to turn Brazil into the largest recipient of tourists in South America until 2027.
The document sets the goal of reaching 8.1 million international visitors per year and generating around $8.1 billion in revenue in the period.
