Dresden. It looks a bit like a toy steam locomotive and is currently on the street in Dresden-Tolkewitz. The device is black – and has a window. What is it about? The city of Dresden has been testing a so-called “speed camera trailer” since Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

The public order office specifically wants to further improve safety on the way to school. The device will now be used for a total of three months. The first location is the area around the Kipsdorfer Straße school campus. According to the city, they also want to test the speed camera in other relevant areas.

In particular, TraffiStar S350 is the speed camera as an enforcement trailer semistation from Jenoptik. This type of speed camera is not without controversy: another Traffistar S350 was a case before the Constitutional Court in Saarland. There, the court declared that pictures of shippers from this device cannot be used because the device does not store raw data. This means that those affected cannot prove that the measurement was wrong. The technology was then not allowed to be used in Saarland.

The Higher Regional Court of Dresden had to hear a similar case in 2020 after the case in Saarland. However, the court came to a different conclusion than the court in Saarland – and dismissed the car driver’s attempt to challenge his fine. The Saxon regional court therefore followed the case law of other higher regional courts, which also ruled that the speed camera does not have to store raw data. (SZ)
