Monday 17 April 2023
Since 2013, speed offenders have been hunted almost everywhere on Day X. This year, the campaign will be extended to a whole week in some federal states. And that starts today. We tell you where and when flashes are used.
lawn kills. Still. And again and again. Most of the 2,782 traffic deaths in the past year were due to “inadequate speed”. That is why the police in large parts of Germany increasingly target speed offenders once a year. The first nationwide campaign of this kind was held in 2013. The last speed camera marathon took place on March 24, 2022 instead of.
Actually, the speed camera marathon doesn’t start until Friday, April 21st. But this Monday, the campaign started in some federal states as a so-called Speedweek and only ends on Sunday, April 23rd. In Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, speed controls will be tightened from today. Bavaria, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, on the other hand, do not want to start the speed camera marathon until Friday. Berlin, Bremen and Saarland are not taking part because of the great effort involved. Hamburg does not want to reveal yet on which day the main speed controls will take place there.
In the relevant federal states, thousands of officials are on duty on the deadlines. The police lie in wait nationwide on federal, state and district roads, avenues and motorways, as well as in 30 km/h zones in front of schools and kindergartens.
The Europe-wide action is coordinated by the European traffic police network Roadpol. The network wants to reduce the number of accident victims. It is therefore not about punishing as many speed sinners as possible, but rather about drawing attention to the dangers of racing.
Not a rip-off, but an educational measure
While critics see the action as a rip-off, the police hope that the driving behavior of road users will change in the future and be adapted to the speed limits. In order to refute the accusation of rip-off, as in previous years, the checkpoints in most countries will be announced in advance. If you drive 21 to 30 km/h too fast within built-up areas, you will be fined 115 to 180 euros and a point in Flensburg. A driving ban usually only threatens if the speed is exceeded by 31 km/h.
