Sales of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 video card, the first representative of the Ampere family, have started today. As expected, not everyone was able to buy the new product – at the start of sales there was a huge deficit. NVIDIA blamed resellers for everything, and not in vain – many overpriced offers appeared on eBay and other sites.
According to the VideoCardz resource, buyers who came for the GeForce RTX 3080 to offline retail stores were mostly able to get the new product without any problems. Those who decided to buy a new video card online were less fortunate. Stocks were sold out in the blink of an eye, as if they weren’t there.
It is reported that even getting to the sites of many stores was almost impossible – the servers simply could not cope with the influx of visitors. AMD employees were not at a loss in this situation, and immediately proposed to transfer the servers of online stores to EPYC processors in order to avoid similar problems in the future. But it’s not a fact that this would help, because the purchases were not carried out by ordinary people, but by the bots of dealers. NVIDIA even released a statement on this matter:
«This morning we saw unprecedented demand for the GeForce RTX 3080 in retail stores around the world, including the NVIDIA online store. At 6 AM PT, we tried to launch the NVIDIA store. Despite the preparation, the NVIDIA store was full of traffic and an error occurred. We were able to resolve the issues and sales started registering normally.
We do our best to stop bots in the NVIDIA Store, including manually reviewing orders to ensure that these cards end up in the hands of regular customers.
More than 50 major retailers around the world had stocks of the new graphics cards as of 6 a.m. PT. NVIDIA and partners are shipping more RTX 3080 cards to retail stores every day.
We apologize to our customers for what happened this morning. ”
Dealers, in turn, immediately began to sell purchased video cards on eBay and other sites. Of course, not at the recommended prices, but at least one and a half times more expensive. While NVIDIA set a MSRP of $ 699, the new GeForce RTX 3080 is now being offered on eBay at prices ranging from $ 1000 to $ 2500, and this is not the limit.
But we must pay tribute to the angry customers who could not buy the new product normally in the store. Some of them set bots on speculators that automatically place unsecured bids on eBay and thereby block sales.
In the end I would like to add that although NVIDIA blamed resellers for all the troubles, we cannot say with complete certainty that they are the only ones to blame. Perhaps the first batches of video cards were very modest. Reports of small stocks of GeForce RTX 3080 have been circulating on the web for some time, and they may have been true. Whether this is so, we will most likely find out in the near future, when information from the sellers themselves appears, official or not.
