The presentation of the latest quarterly figures from Facebook could be more exciting than usual tomorrow. Because according to the latest media reports, founder and boss Mark Zuckerberg wants to give the group a new name – and the numbers presented are seen as a good reason to do so. There would also be another opportunity on Thursday at the in-house developer conference Connect.
With a new name, Zuckerberg reportedly wants to lead the group out of the shadow of its original and so far most important platform, Facebook. The group of companies also includes the Instagram photo service and the WhatsApp and Messenger chat apps.
Keyword “Metaverse”
The 37-year-old Facebook founder sees the future in the “Metaverse”, a virtual environment in which physical and digital worlds are supposed to come together. There is speculation that the new company name could also go in this direction. However, a few days ago the well-connected tech journalist Casey Newton also reported on his blog Platformer that Zuckerberg had not yet made a final decision on the new name.
The quarterly figures could meanwhile turn out to be less glamorous than one is used to from Facebook. The reason is Apple’s new rules for more privacy on the iPhone. Since the summer, all app developers have had to ask users for their permission if they want to track their activities across different applications and services for advertising purposes. According to surveys, most users reject this.
