The riders of Team Ineos, which every day at the start of the Route d’Occitanie include Egan Bernal and Chris Froome, can participate.
For example, Dylan van Baarle told the Dutch broadcaster NOS on Sunday evening that the spectators simply walked with the riders to the team bus after the stage.
“At training camp in the run-up to this race it was all about corona. And that’s what the peloton is about now. You just can’t escape it”, says Van Baarle in a radio interview.
“As for the restrictions here, I think it’s quite mild. When you see how many people are on the side without a mouth mask, I’m surprised.”
“Of course the audience is kept away from us as much as possible at the start of the stages, but I don’t notice that the organization does much to make people more accountable.”
“Our team has argued that we want to ride to the bus after the ride without an audience. Because it sometimes happens that people just walk along and still pull a bottle from your bike.”
That promises for the Tour de France, which should start in Nice in a few weeks.
Van Baarle: “If it goes on like this, with even more audience, it will be a difficult story. Although the Tour is a different organization, just like the Dauphiné, so it will probably be different there.”
