It can take many years, but it can also happen tomorrow: the explosion of super giant Betelgeuse. This big star is located 600 light-years from the Earth, but the supernova, as an exploding star is called, would be seen here even in daylight.
The energy of Betelgeuze is running out. As a result, part of its own mass flows to the star. As a result, it becomes increasingly heavier and will eventually collapse under its own weight, resulting in an enormous explosion. The supernova is probably good to see from the earth.
The big question, however, is when it will happen. Astronomers recently discovered that Betelgeuse has become a lot less clear in recent weeks. This indicates that the energy is running out. Nevertheless, the scientists are holding back. It has happened more often that the star was temporarily less clear.
It is therefore unclear whether the current decrease in brightness indicates that the supernova is imminent or that the star will soon become brighter again and will take many years to come.
