Shooting stars, or meteors as they are officially called, are bits of space debris that burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere. The larger the piece of debris, the brighter the meteor glows and the longer it takes to extinguish.
With extremely large pieces of debris, the meteor is so bright that it is called a fireball.
