Specialist: Cholesterol is beneficial, but there are limits

Surabaya (ANTARA) – Internal medicine specialist, Dr. Denny Jolanda Sp.PD-KHOM said that cholesterol is beneficial, but there are limits to avoiding disease.

“If the cholesterol level is excess, there will be a buildup of fat layers along the blood vessels. If this condition continues, the cholesterol that continues to accumulate will cause blood vessel constriction and worsen heart performance,” he said in a statement received in Surabaya, Saturday night.

According to him, cholesterol is necessary for the body to process metabolism, build new cells, produce vitamin D and form hormones, but not all cholesterol can be useful.

High cholesterol, he said, could be the root of various serious diseases, especially cardiovascular disease.

“When you know that cholesterol levels in the body are too high, you need to be vigilant and immediately lower them. One natural way to reduce high cholesterol is to change your lifestyle and diet,” he said.

In addition to taking medicines prescribed by doctors, he said, there are several natural ways that can be done to make cholesterol drop faster, such as increasing consumption of vegetables and fruit, avoiding fatty foods, exercising, and quitting smoking.

However, he added, before making various efforts to lower cholesterol, it is necessary to know the cholesterol level first.

“Moreover, high cholesterol often does not cause significant symptoms. Routine health checks are needed,” he said.
