Special trip to Liverpool for Laois Comhaltas group

Spink Comhaltas Brings Irish Spirit to Liverpool in Special Performance

Spink Comhaltas recently undertook a memorable journey to Liverpool, where they performed to an enthusiastic audience at the Irish Centre. This event not only showcased the group’s musical talent but also offered a unique opportunity for the musicians to connect with the local Irish community, including some notable Laois emigrants.

A Journey of Music and Heritage

On a chilly night, 47 dedicated musicians boarded a bus laden with instruments, gifts, and copies of the Spink Comhaltas history book. Their voyage began with a ferry crossing to Wales, leading them to the vibrant city of Liverpool. The group engaged in various activities that highlighted Irish culture and music, including a visit to St. Matthews Catholic Primary School. There, they introduced students to the beauty and joy of Irish music, fostering cultural appreciation.

The trip also had a reflective element. The musicians paid tribute to the victims of the tragic Hillsborough disaster at the Hillsborough Memorial. A particularly moving moment occurred when Daniel Aylward performed the slow air "Easter Snow" on the Uilleann Pipes, poignantly commemorating lives lost during that fateful day. The memorial featured many Irish names, underscoring the connection between the musicians and the victims, many of whom were the same age as Spink’s performers.

Full House at the Irish Centre

The highlight of the trip was an evening performance at the Irish Centre in Liverpool, where Spink Comhaltas shared the stage with notable local groups, including Liverpool Comhaltas Group, The Lowlands Ceilí Band, and The Liverpool Ceilí Band. The enthusiasm of a full house enriched the night, further inspiring the musicians to deliver captivating performances.

A special moment of the evening was the appearance of Gerry McCann, a legendary nonagenarian fiddler who emigrated from Clonaslee 70 years ago. His participation with The Lowlands Ceilí Band enchanted attendees, bridging generations of musical talent. Alongside Gerry, the musicians also reconnected with Freda Kilgannon, originally from Ballyroan, who had made Liverpool her home since she was just 16.

Organizing the Journey

“This trip had been in the works for some time. Spink Comhaltas has ventured abroad before—previous trips included destinations like the UK, Netherlands, France, and Germany—but we felt a journey to Liverpool was long overdue,” shared a spokesperson for Spink Comhaltas. The initial outreach was made to the Liverpool Comhaltas group earlier this year, and arrangements were formalized during the Fleadh Cheoil in Wexford.

The ambitious journey involved considerable fundraising efforts by the musicians and branch committee, receiving generous support from local individuals and Comhaltas.

Shared Heritage and Connection

Maria Dunne, the branch secretary of Spink Comhaltas and originally from Mayo, expressed her appreciation for the cultural ties established during the trip. One of the highlights for her was when Chris Boland, Chairman of Liverpool Comhaltas, performed a song celebrating his childhood in Irishtown, Mayo. “His song captured the spirited rivalry between Mayo and Galway, resonating with anyone connected to their hometown,” she remarked.

The trip served as a heartwarming reminder of the strength and vibrancy of Irish culture, bringing together individuals from the community to celebrate their shared heritage through music.

As members of Spink Comhaltas reflect on this enriching experience in Liverpool, they look forward to future opportunities to connect with audiences and share the enduring spirit of Irish music.
