The special prosecutor in Georgia who had a relationship with his boss has formally resigned. Nathan Wade was appointed special prosecutor in the Georgia case against Donald Trump. In that case, the former president is on trial for possible interference in the elections.
Wade was in a relationship with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, where the case is pending. The relationship became known in January and led to great outrage in Trump’s camp, among others. A judge ruled that Wade had to resign, otherwise Willis would not be allowed to continue with the case. Wade complied yesterday.
Phone call
This allows Willis to continue to focus on the case against Trump and fourteen others in Georgia. The case is sparked by a phone call Trump made in 2021 in which he told a driver, “I just want to find 11,780 votes because we won the state.”
Biden won the state by a margin of 11,779 votes. The phone call led to two years of investigation. Trump is accused of, among other things, extortion and violating his oath of office.
Misconduct
Trump’s camp is not happy that Willis is allowed to continue in the case. A lawyer for the former president says they respect the judge’s decision, but that the judge “failed to assign appropriate meaning to Willis and Wade’s misconduct.”
Steve Sadow, one of Trump’s lawyers, said he will “exercise all available legal options as we continue to fight to end this case that should never have been started in the first place.”
Case may start in August
Willis wants the trial of Trump and the others to start on August 5. It is still unknown whether that will actually be the start date. Willis previously hinted that it will be a process that will “probably take several months.” As a result, it is quite possible that the case will still be ongoing when the presidential elections are held in November.
Trump reported to the Fulton County Jail last August to formally surrender. A police photo was taken of him, among other things. He is released on bail after paying 200,000 dollars (more than 183,000 euros).
