The US Department of Justice announced on Friday appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the son of President Joe Biden, Hunter, who is charged with tax evasion by the court and questionable foreign business by the Republican opposition. The news comes as her father is campaigning for a second term.
Targeted by Republicans
David Weiss, a federal prosecutor, was already investigating “allegations of criminal conduct by, among others, Robert Hunter Biden,” Merrick Garland said in brief remarks. The minister said Weiss told him on Tuesday that he believed he had reached a point in his investigation that required him to be appointed as a special prosecutor.
“He asked to be named. After considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances surrounding this subject, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint him as a special prosecutor, ”continued Merrick Garland. The minister did not provide further details.
Hunter Biden, 53, is accused of tax evasion and acquiring a firearm while a drug addict. He has been targeted for years by his father’s predecessor, Donald Trump, and the Republicanswho accuse him of corruption and ensure that the Ministry of Justice is trying at all costs to avoid a prison sentence for the son of the current president.
