The joy of returning to the track of the Jorge “El Mágico” González National Stadium was reflected today in the faces of the 180 participants of Special Olympics El Salvador who competed in the athletics qualifiers in order to obtain the best prospects heading to the Latin American Games 2024, in Asunción, Paraguay from October 4 to 12.
The event featured representatives from 19 institutions, including schools and associations, who coexisted not only on a sporting level, but also socially with their teammates and coaches.
The protagonists came from Sonsonate, Chalatenango, Cojutepeque, La Unión, La Libertad, San Vicente, Santa Ana, San Salvador. And the competition events were 25, 50, 100, 200 meters, as well as long jump with and without momentum.
It is important to mention that the first places in each event will participate in the draw that will award the four places for Salvadoran athletics in the international competition, a raffle that will take place next week.
René Marcia, volunteer of the special Olympics subprogram, stated that the competition has not only served to obtain the candidates for the draw, but also exposed all the effort and sacrifice that each one of them put into it.
“The boys have given their best effort today to achieve first place in each test. It is important to mention that athletes have two opportunities to achieve first place, since they can participate in two events. Now we see how they are giving their best,” Marcia said.
The coach also stated that organizing an athletics event again in the remodeled Jorge “El Mágico” González National Stadium left many of the athletes surprised and excited.
“It is important to say that for several of the boys it is their first time on this sporting stage and for others it is a very emotional return to see how beautiful it is. These events not only allow us to have winners, but also happy athletes,” said René.
