Special Mudguards for Formula 1 Cars: FIA’s Solution to Rainy Weather Conditions and Visibility Issues

The FIA has prepared special mudguards for Formula 1 cars, which will only be fitted to the wheels in case of rainy weather. The automobile federation came up with the idea after the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, when the main race was not finished at all due to bad conditions and drivers had to be awarded half points.

“Feedback from the pilots indicated that, in the vast majority of cases, visibility is reduced in rainy conditions as the wheels spray water everywhere at high speed. Therefore, the FIA decided to work on new parts to prevent this problem,” says the federation. “We think we will use the fenders maybe two or three times a year. We don’t want to put them on every time a drop of rain falls, only in really extreme conditions,” he adds.

At Silverstone, only the Mercedes team will run with fenders, while McLaren will not, so that the FIA can identify the differences. The tests will take place on July 13.
