Special Guests in Zomergasten 2023: Thomas Hertog, Hoyte van Hoytema, Khadija Arib, Bibi Dumon Tak, and Alida Dors

One thing is certain: several special conversations await him.

Thomas Hertog

The Flemish cosmologist and professor of theoretical physics Thomas Hertog has the honor of kicking off this year. “On this summer evening, we are looking with broad sights to the future, to possible extraterrestrial life forms and the entry of artificial intelligence into science,” the broadcaster said.

A good choice, according to presenter Theo Maassen. He used to enjoy films that took place in space such as Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Interstellar. “Now I have a chance to talk to someone who really knows what’s going on in the cosmos. Space, gravity, the big bang, quantum mechanics, extraterrestrial life, black holes. I want to understand. I want to know.”

Hoyte van Hoytema

A week later it’s Hoyte van Hoytema’s turn. He is partly due to movies like the James Bond movie Spectre, Nope and blockbusters like Tenet, Interstellar and Dunkirk one of the most in-demand cinematographers of the moment. And that’s not just. For the latter film he received an Oscar nomination, the first ever from a Dutch cinematographer.

For Maassen, a true dream comes true with Hoyte van Hoytema as a guest. “When I knew I was going to present Zomergasten, there was a name that I immediately called out: Hoyte van Hoytema. I hope I can keep a professional distance, because I am a fanboy,” said the presenter. “He was behind the camera in many of my favorite films. He has never shot a film in the Netherlands, but I am honored that he will return especially for us.”

Khadija Arib

Former chamber president and politician Khadija Arib can also be seen in this new season of Zomergasten. Her episode will air on August 6.

“In Zomergasten I want to talk about the struggle an outsider has to wage to be seen and treated as a full member of society, about the role of the outsider and what it takes to settle on foreign soil,” she says. already ahead. “I also want to talk about trust and distrust between citizens and the state: how have we changed as a society? But above all I ask the question: how have I changed myself?”

The presenter is of course also happy with her arrival. “When I saw her as President of the House, I always thought: I think she would be a good stand-up comedian,” says Theo. “She is incredibly witty, charming, not afraid of anyone, has charisma and has a specific background that makes her look at the Netherlands in her own way.” Read more about it here.

Bibi Dumon Tak

On Sunday 13 August, Maassen will open its doors to author Bibi Dumon Tak, who won both a Zilveren Griffel and the Woutertje Pieterseprijs in 2023 for her publication “Today I’m giving my speech about the anaconda”. Viewers can also know her from her books Rat Boys (2007) in The Day I Changed My Name (2020). In the latter she wrote, among other things, about the impotence, the sadness and the anger she felt when her brother-in-law forbade her to see her nephews after the death of her sister.

The presenter can’t wait to speak with her. “When I started reading her work, I was immediately sold. Her books are so sensitive, so funny and educational,” he says. “What lucid ideas too, like animals giving talks to other animals. I wish it had already happened, my meeting with Bibi Dumon Tak.”

Alida Dors

Alida Dors has the honor of closing the season this year. She is best known as a theater maker and choreographer and since the spring of 2020 she is also the artistic director of Theater Rotterdam. This was created after a merger of the Ro Theater, Production House Rotterdam and the Rotterdamse Schouwburg and is one of the largest public theater institutions in the Netherlands. Her dance performance continued in 2021 I received premiered and choreographed the piece The Story of Travis.

Particularly because of the latter, she managed to attract the attention of Theo Maassen. “I had to cry. Cry really hard during the performance The Story of Travis. The play that was rightly selected for the Nederlands Theaterfesival this year,” said the presenter. “I don’t know exactly what happened, I was spoken to in a language I didn’t speak, but which I apparently understood (…) I want to get to know her better. I wonder what drives her and how she manages it got to make me cry like that.”
