The SPD Darmstadt signals approval for the initiative of the city council to introduce speed 30 in the urban area.

The Darmstadt SPD signals approval for the city council’s move to introduce Tempo 30 in the city.

The regulation could be a useful contribution to “breaking the dominance of the car,” says traffic spokesman Tim Huß. Before that, however, several conditions would have to be met for the SPD. On the one hand, local public transport, for example city buses, should be exempt from the regulation. The Tempo 30 regulation should under no circumstances degrade the quality of local public transport, says transport spokesman Tim Huß. Tempo 50 should continue to apply wherever there is still no separation between public transport and car traffic on main roads,

Model project

The city of Darmstadt, which is governed by the Greens and the CDU, has applied to the Federal Ministry of Transport for a model project.

The project envisages that speed 30 will apply across the city.

This is intended to provide better protection for pedestrians and cyclists and to reduce noise and exhaust emissions. jon

The SPD also suggests that the expensive urban outskirts tariff be abolished and that an affordable public transport tariff be introduced for all of Darmstadt. “Districts such as Arheilgen, Eberstadt or Wixhausen are unfortunately often forgotten when planning traffic in Darmstadt,” says Huß. “These parts of the city should not simply be disconnected from the core city. In addition, according to the SPD, the traffic light circuit must be improved. “At the moment you have a lot of stop and go – that’s annoying and environmentally harmful,” says Huss.

Due to the improved circuit, the Tempo 30 control could only have a “traffic-liquefying” effect.

The SPD mentions the expansion of the cycling infrastructure as a further requirement. “Ordinary bike paths are still rare in Darmstadt,” criticizes Huss. The Darmstadt magistrate, of which the SPD is not a full-time member, is working to ensure that speed 30 will soon apply across the city. The city has also launched a campaign to encourage drivers to maintain a minimum distance of one and a half meters from cyclists.
