SPD insists on more money for those in need in the Corona crisis

Demands on the Union

For months, the Chancellor and the Prime Ministers set the course for the corona crisis. Now the party leaders of the Union and SPD come back to the train. The SPD in particular is pushing forward with demands.

Before today’s coalition committee, the SPD makes clear socio-political demands on the Union. SPD leader Saskia Esken demanded another child bonus for families with low incomes.

“I have the clear expectation that we will talk today in the coalition committee about a new edition of the child bonus,” said Esken of the “Rheinische Post”. They had very good experiences with this bonus payment for families last year and now want to once again support those who have to be asked a lot in this pandemic – children and families.

Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) reiterated his call for a subsidy for people with basic security and low wage earners. “Daycare centers, schools, youth clubs, social department stores or libraries have been closed for a long time,” Heil told the “Rheinische Post”. Offers of help for people in need were often not available.

“For us as the SPD, an important point is that we look once more at the weakest in our society, who are particularly hard hit by the Corona situation,” said Secretary General Lars Klingbeil of the “Passauer Neue Presse”.

The heads of the Union and SPD will meet this Wednesday in the coalition committee with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). It is the first meeting of its kind in a long time. Before that, the Prime Minister’s Conference with Merkel had set the decisive course in the corona crisis. For the first time, the new CDU chairman Armin Laschet takes part in the top round in the Chancellery. SPD boss Norbert Walter-Borjans had called for such a meeting with a decision in favor of one-time Corona emergency aid in the amount of 200 euros for recipients of basic security.

For its part, the Union wants to achieve relief for burdened companies. A company with corona-related losses from 2020 and 2021 should be able to offset these against profits from 2019 in its tax return.
